Anti-imperialist forces around the world were shocked within the last hour when the news broke that two of the Middle East and the world’s most significant fighters against US imperialism, Iranian Major-General Qassem Soleimani, head of the elite Quds Force, and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, were killed in a joint strike by the US Air Force and their Zionist lackeys. These two martys dedicated and ultimately sacrificed their lives for a Middle East and a world that is independent and free of imperialist domination.
This is a shocking loss for global anti-imperialist forces but a significant act of war against independent countries. It also represents a huge jolt towards another imperialist world war that threatens to send the workers and peoples of the world to their deaths for the benefit of the imperialists and the coffers of their monopoly corporations.
Monopoly capitalists are vultures in this war against the people of the Middle East, living off the deaths of others. These contractors and dealers in the weapons of imperialism have seen their stock prices jump following this act of aggression. This signifies that war is expected not only by those who suffer from imperialism, but the empire itself.
At the same time, several NATO governments have authorised an increased military presence in Libya to protect their own interests in the bitter civil war that they themselves caused when they overthrew the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya at the start of the last decade.
The Asia-Pacific is also being rapidly militarised by US imperialism in another lurch towards global war. The empire has increased its colonial grip on occupied south Korea and returned to its revanchist policy of aggression towards the DPRK despite the DPRK’s genuine attempts at peaceful reunification over the past year and a half. The people of Okinawa, Japan were also overruled by US imperialism and their island has seen increased militarisation – to the detriment of both human life and the environment.
Another world is possible, a world of genuine peace and solidarity. From their opposition to the imperialist conflict of World War One to the present day, Marxist-Leninists and the socialist countries have always stood alongside other popular forces as a bulwark for peace and independent development. Just over a month ago, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic hosted a meeting of the World Peace Council that brought together the anti-imperialist and peace forces of the Asia-Pacific and the world in a popular front against imperialist war.
It is clear to us Communists that a genuine popular front against imperialism is needed on a national scale to continue not only this global tradition but a uniquely Aotearoa opposition to imperialism. A tradition of Parihaka, Rua Kēnana Hepetipa, Archibald Baxter, the Rainbow Warrior, the Peace Council and the Organisation to Halt Military Service. We signal our intention to regroup this genuine anti-imperialist and peace forces into a new organisation for peace, anti-imperialism and friendship.
Communists, socialists, trade unions, mana whenua and other popular forces must unite to stop imperialist wars and New Zealand’s participation in the US’s brutal campaign of global domination. This must come from the workers’ movement and other popular forces. The NZ capitalist class will always kowtow to US imperialism when pressured. We recall Peter Fraser getting arrested during World War One and charged with sedition for his stance against conscription, and the Labour Party’s stated opposition to conscription in 1940, only for Fraser’s Labour Government to introduce it a year later!
Over the next two weeks, the New Communist Party of Aotearoa will begin an outreach process to other groups within the popular and workers’ movement to begin consolidation into a front for anti-imperialism and for peace. We look forward to continuing the tradition of Aotearoa’s resistance to war, arm in arm with mass organisations up and down the country.
